Ubuntu 14.04.2 Cloud Image in VMDK Format

ubuntu-blue-1440x900 (1)

I am attempting to take the Ubuntu cloud image for Openstack and convert it to VMDK to import into (Openstack) Glance for a client that only uses ESXi as a hypervisor.  I was unable to find any place that had this available for download so I am attempting to build one.

I am downloading from Ubuntu here:

Ubuntu Trusty 14.04.2 Cloud Image

This image is in QCOW2 format.  I am then converting it with qemu-image convert:

qemu-img convert -f qcow2 trusty-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.img -O vmdk trusty-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.vmdk

Here is the result:

Ubuntu 14.04.2 Trusty Tahr Cloud Image VMDK

Let me know if you have any luck with this and what versions of VMWare/VCenter you are importing to if you would.

Thanks.

  1. If you remove all branding, trademarks, and references to Ubuntu, you are legally okay to sell systems with it installed. Of course, you must provide the source code of all GPL components to customers that request it.
